Frequently Asked Questions

Where and when does the club meet?

Every Tuesday 19:30 - 22:30 at the Haldens Sports and Social Club, Margery Wood, Welwyn Garden City.

There is plenty of parking outside the venue. The club has use of a function room just outside the main bar area or chess sets can be taken into the main bar area itself.

How do I join?

Feel free to come along any Tuesday to talk to us and play a few games. Either just turn up or if you prefer to contact us and let us know you are coming in advance we will ensure there is someone there to greet you.

Come along for a few sessions and if you enjoy the experience and want to become a full member the annual membership costs are £30 for adults or £15 for OAPs. This fee also includes membership to the Sports and Social Club.

Does Welwyn Hatfield play competitive chess against other teams in the area?

Yes, currently Welwyn Hatfield has a team in the Herts League Division 2 and in the H&D League. We are hopeful to enter more teams in the next season.

It is up to you whether you would be interested in joining a team or would rather just enjoy social games.

Are children welcome to join?

Under 18s can join the club for social games or competitive chess. However, please note there may be restrictions on them entering the bar area after a certain time. The club does not offer any formal chess coaching.
