Frequently Asked Questions
Where and when does the club meet?
Every Tuesday 19:30 - 22:30 at the Haldens Sports and Social Club, Margery Wood, Welwyn Garden City. AL7 1UN
There is plenty of parking outside the venue. The club has use of a function room just outside the main bar area or chess sets can be taken into the main bar area itself.
How do I join and are there any fees?
Feel free to come along any Tuesday from 19:30 to talk to us and play a few games. Either just turn up or if you prefer to contact us and let us know you are coming in advance we will ensure there is someone there to greet you.

Come along for a few sessions and if you enjoy the experience and want to become a full member the annual membership costs are £30 for adults or £15 for OAPs. This fee also includes membership to the Sports and Social Club.
Does Welwyn Hatfield play competitive chess against other teams in the area?
Yes, currently Welwyn Hatfield has a team in the Herts League Division 2, Division 6 and a team in the H&D League.
It is up to you whether you would be interested in joining a team or would rather just enjoy social games. Playing competitively would also require that you become a member of the English Chess Federation (ECF). This is approx. £20 a year or £6 for Juniors and will allow your games to be graded.
Are children welcome to join?
Under 18s can join the club for social games or competitive chess. However, please note the membership is mostly adults and the club is not set up to cater specifically for juniors. Adults who are accompanying juniors are welcome to stay within the function room or wait in the bar area. (The Halden's site has wifi, snooker/pool, sports tv, darts, bar and friendly staff).
Given the time/location of the chess meetings it is probably not suitable for under 11's.
The club does not currently offer any formal chess coaching/tutoring.
If you have any further questions feel free to contact us. We will usually reply within a day or so.
