Competitive Chess 2026-2027 season

Welwyn Hatfield will likely have teams in Div2, Div3, Div6(tbd) and H&D.

Andrew R is captain for Div2 team. Andrew Sm captain (Div3). Tony is captain for H&D.

Div6 - Last year we had a team in he Div6. For the next season we could do the same or there is possibility to enter teams in the U1450 league, the U1650 league (or all 3). The club has enough players to do this but we will require captains to organise the matches, teams, lifts, etc... . Any volunteers?

WhatsApp Group

There is a Whatsapp group set up for general communications and finding out who is attending the club on any given Tuesday. If you are not part of the WhatsApp (and wish to be) please ask any of the Andrews to add you.

Want to play for Hertfordshire County?

Herts County will likely have 3 teams in 2025/2026 season. U1850, U1650 and U1450. To qualify to play you need to be under these grades in the Sept rating.

If you wish to play in the 2026-2027 season please let any of the Andrews, Roger or Tony know and they can put you in touch with the organisers.

There are 16 players per team, and there are typically a number of other Welwyn Hatfield members who go and can share lifts.

Internal/Social Event Ideas

Our club is open throughout the year. There are few competitive chess matches between June and October so any ideas for internal events throughout the quiet months are welcome. Blitz, Rapid, Fischer Random. Casablanca Chess. Chessboxing. Chess training sessions (openings / endgames). Guest speakers. Friendly matches. If there's enough people willing to take part then we can look to do it. Suggestions can be made through club Whatsapp group or speak to Roger, Tony or (any) Andrew.
