General News And Information
Competitive Chess 2025-2026 season
2025 saw Welwyn Hatfield enter teams in Div2, H&D, Sharp Trophy AND a new team into Herts Div 6. David was captain for Div2 team. Tony was captain for H&D and Div6.
It is to be confirmed how many teams we will enter in the 2025-2026 season but it is likely to be similar. Please let David or Tony know if you are interested in playing competitive chess and they will ensure you get some games. See fixtures page for dates. Please note you will also need to have at least a Bronze membership of the ECF. Details to join ECF can be found here.
WhatsApp Group
There is a Whatsapp group set up for general communications and finding out who is attending the club on any given Tuesday. If you are not part of the WhatsApp (and wish to be) please ask David or any of the Andrews to add you.
Chess Magazines/Books
The club has a number of old chess magazines and books. If any member wishes to borrow them then please feel free to do so. We operate an honesty policy, so just bring them back once you are finished with them.
If you have any old books you are happy for other members to borrow then please bring them in.
Want to play for Hertfordshire County?
Herts County entered 2 teams in 2025. U1850 and U1600. To qualify to play you need to be under these grades in the Sept rating. Matt Ball (St Albans) is organiser for the U1850 team. Martin Hill (St Albans) is organiser for the U1600.
If you wish to play in the 2026 season please let any of the Andrews, Roger, David or Tony know and they can put you in touch with the organisers.
There are 16 players per team, and there are typically a number of other Welwyn Hatfield members who go and can share lifts.
